Historical Overview

The earliest settlers of the Susquehanna County region began arriving in the area in the late 1790's. During this time frame Susquehanna County did not exist yet. The region now known as Susquehanna County was actually carved out of Luzerne County. Luzerne County was originally under the jurisdiction of Connecticut so many of the settlers of this region settled from Connecticut. Susquehanna County was created on February 21, 1810. During these early years, many of the settlements have changed names, some mulptiple times which can make researching ancestors from this area confusing and a challenge. The goal of this page is to assist others in eliminating some of the confusion. When researching early Susquehanna County ancestors, Luzerne County histories should be included in reseach materials. This page is not intended as a complete history. I will provide a list of historical references at the bottom of this page.
